Kanye West was awarded an honorary doctorate from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. The rapper/fashion designer, abandoned his studies at Chicago State University to pursue a career in music.
“To be stereotyped as a hip-hop artist can be very much a hood that can put you in positions where people wouldn’t expect you to be,” West said about his visual art work. “And in the same way how, when you step into places that have a ‘you’re not from here’-type vibe, if you are from there, and you’re too accredited, a lot of times people will put their guards up, and be less willing to work with you. And a lot of times I’ve been able to work with the most amazing people on the planet because I was considered not to be a threat to what they do – because I was just there to be a ‘hip-hop artist.'”
Ceza’s collaboration with Dr. Fuchs as the group Nefret was instrumental in the advent of ‘Oriental hip hop’ in Germany. As Ceza became increasingly popular and young Turkish immigrants in Germany came to identify more with their Turkish roots and dispare, ‘Oriental hip hop’ was born. The central shift was “the rejection of African-American samples in favor of samples drawn from Turkish Arabesk and pop” and this was “emblematic of the blending of diasporic Black culture and diasporic Turkish culture.

Nas‘s debut album Illmatic, widely regarded as one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time, is celebrating its 20 year anniversary this year. To commemorate the project Nas will be release Illmatic XX, which will feature both a remastered version of the original album in addition to a collection previously unreleased demo tracks, freestyles and remixes. Today “I’m A Villain,” which is one of those early 90’s demo tracks set to be included on the reissue, has found its way to the surface.
Today, Biggie is still one of the music industry’s most admired hip-hop artists. Several musicians have paid tribute to Biggie by mentioning him in their songs, and his musical style has been emulated by countless up-and-coming artists. Undoubtedly, Biggie’s talent as a writer and rapper will continue to be acknowledged for decades to come.
