Pharrell Williams will co-own Roli’s modular instrument business

There’s no question that Pharrell Williams has had at least some fondness for technology (his Daft Punk collabs and gold-tinged smartphones were big clues), but now he’s taking that appreciation to Will.I.Am levels. Roli has revealed that Pharrell is not only becoming its Chief Creative Officer, but will invest in and take co-ownership of the modular instrument startup. He’ll have a vested interest in Roli’s success, in other words. The company hasn’t outlined the terms of the deal, but the superstar will help develop “revolutionary” digital instruments that are accessible and “iconic.”

The first output from the team-up is a Pharrell sound pack for Roli’s Noise app that lets you build tunes using the instruments and vocals of “Happy.” It’s not exactly a brand new piece of hardware, but it’s a start.

It’s easy to be a bit skeptical about the move: just ask BlackBerry how Alicia Keys’ Creative Director role panned out. However, it sounds like Pharrell will be more than a celebrity figurehead. While you probably won’t see him tinkering with prototypes in the engineering lab, he’s clearly interested in shaping Roli and its products. The larger question is whether or not his involvement will have a visible effect — you’ll want to keep an eye out for new controls and other thoughtful touches that you’d expect from a veteran artist.

Pharrell x Adidas “Tennis HU”

Pharrell and Adidas have plenty in store for the coming months, including the recently unveiled Adidas NMD “Human Race” Trail, and these upcoming Adidas Tennis HU sneakers.

Today it was revealed that four different colorways of the Pharrell x Adidas Tennis HU will be hitting retailers worldwide on July 28th. Each will reportedly retail for $110.

All of the kicks are built on the beloved primeknit material, featuring a range of colors including two different multicolor joints, and two solid colorways that are grounded by vibrant, multi-colored midsoles.

In addition to allowing the service to stream his album ‘The Chronic’, the good doctor will also have a twice-monthly show on Beats 1 called “The Pharmacy.”

The Pharmacy will make its debut today at 3PM PST, and air every other Saturday in the same time slot.

Q-Tip’s weekly Beats 1 radio show, “Abstract Thought” which premieres tonight at 10pm ET on Apple Music, is a whirlwind of hip-hop, rock, afrobeat, salsa, disco and more.

Beats 1 will also feature a host of special shows from the likes of Drake, Pharrell, Disclosure and Jaden Smith.

Pharrell Native American Headdress & #UnHappy Critics

The new cover of Elle UK features Pharrell outfitted in a Native American headdress that already has critics up in arms.
Angry commenters expressed their displeasure on both Elle’s and Pharrell’s Facebook pages.
“Even if you are part Native the headdress is off limits,” wrote one user. “Its for Warriors and people of the plains culture.. You don’t have the right to wear that.” Pharell expressed his apology online saying, “I respect and honor every kind of race, background and culture. I am genuinely sorry.”

Pharrell’s HAPPY Song has touched off a global online phenomenon with hundreds of cover versions being recorded in more than 140 countries.

Pharrell set to bring Bionic Yarn to Adidas with an eco-friendly clothing collection made from recycled bottles



Pharrell Williams has signed a deal with Adidas.

The Happy hitmaker – who is currently working on a collection for high street brand Uniqlo – is thrilled to have the opportunity to design a collection using eco-friendly Bionic Yarn (a company in which he is an investor) for the sportswear giant, which will debut this summer.

The 40-year-old musician said: ‘Working with an iconic brand like Adidas is such an incredible opportunity. From the classic tracksuit, to growing up in Virginia wearing Stan Smiths, Adidas has been a staple in my life. Their pieces are timeless. This is an exciting partnership for both me and for Bionic Yarn.


The collection will be fabricated of Bionic Yarn – a sustainable material that is spun from recycled plastic bottles. Pharrell serves as the company’s ambassador, as well as an investor. The fibers have previously been used in everything from home design, to a limited-edition range of denim for Topshop.

Adidas is equally delighted to collaborate with Pharrell – who is married to Helen Lasichanh – and thinks he’s ‘perfect’ for the brand.

Dirk Schoenberger, Adidas’ sport style division global creative director, added: ‘I am truly thrilled to work with Pharrell.

‘He is a pop-culture icon who never fails to inspire, not just through his musical talent and craft, but through his many other interests. He is the perfect fit for the multi-faceted company that is Adidas.’

In designing for Adidas, Pharrell follows in the footsteps of high fashion designers including Raf Simons, Rick Owens, and Yohji Yamamoto.

The singer admitted in an interview with WWD: ‘I’m definitely not on the level of these people, who are real designers and do this as a profession. I’m more of a student.’

Bionic Yarn

Launched by high school friends and outdoors enthusiasts Tyson Toussant and Tim Coombs, Return Textiles began as a maker of hi-tech fabrics for outdoor gear. Now, the company is making its mark with Bionic Yarn, a soft yet durable canvas substitute made primarily from recycled plastic bottles. In a patented process, the plastic polymers from recycled bottles are wrapped around polyester fibers and swaddled in cotton. The result is a strong, fast-drying material that removes dreaded plastic bottles from the waste stream.

In 2009, hip hop Renaissance man Pharrell Williams invested in the company and became Bionic Yarn’s brand ambassador. Since then, Bionic Yarn has landed lucrative, big-name projects with the likes of Moncler and Timberland. It’s all part of the founders’ plan to make stronger thread — for the greater good.


Trash and the ocean do not mix, yet apparently music and the ocean go well together as American singer-songwriter and record producer Pharrell Williams launched a new eco-denim line advocating for less plastic pollution in the ocean during New York’s Fashion Week.

The artist, who is also a fashion designer and has two brands named Billionaire Boys Club and Ice Cream, partnered with Dutch denim label G-Star Raw to create the denim line called Raw for the Oceans.

The collection features a unique blend of materials – recycled plastic PET taken from the ocean, and cotton – that is developed by Bionic Yarn, a sustainable textiles firm of which Williams is the creative director.

Bionic Yarn specialises in the development and manufacturing of the eco-fabric. The firm collects the discarded plastic waste from the ocean and processes it into recycled fibres, which is then configured to the desired fabric, either mixing it with cotton for denim or wool and other natural blends for suit fabrics.

G-Star Raw and Williams are driving the creative and commercial aspects of the collection. Williams, at the unveiling event on Sunday at the American Museum of Natural History, commended the Dutch firm for participating in the collaboration, explaining how it is not always that a “big force in fashion” cares about the environment. Still, they came on board and “just turned on the turbo boost buttons”, he added, according to an Examiner report.

Raw for the Oceans is also done in partnership with The Vortex Project, an initiative of Parley for the Oceans, a coalition of different sectors such as artists, activists, scientists for marine conservation.


According to the Project, recent studies have indicated that at least 40 million pounds of plastic have accumulated and are floating in the North Pacific Ocean alone, and that more plastic waste are converging in five huge gyres or whirlpools scattered around the world. The challenge is to retrieve all this plastic and save the marine ecosystem, primarily through sustainable consumer products that “carry the story of ocean plastic pollution into the world”.

The Raw for the Oceans denim collection is one example, especially with its brand power by association. Williams, who won with Daft Punk at the recent Grammy Awards, noted that this collaboration will hopefully put the spotlight to the global problem of ocean pollution and marine degradation.

In an interview with WWD, he said: “There just aren’t enough laws [to protect the oceans]. In America, we can’t judge any other country until our own policies change.”

“Fashion is certainly a huge part of everybody’s lives. You wear it every day and for some people it’s a status symbol, or a statement of how much they have spent on clothes, or it’s a means of expressing their identity and who they are. We [Bionic Yarn and G-Star Raw] are trying to infiltrate the entire spectrum of fashion, high-end and low. It’s a part of sustainability and the cause is to never throw anything [plastics and trash] into the ocean again,” he added.

The Raw for Oceans denim line will be available online and in select G-Star Raw stores worldwide starting August 15.
