Dr. Dre, Jimmy Iovine ‘The Defiant Ones’ Doc to Air on HBO

HBO will premiere The Defiant Ones‘ first episode on July 9th, with subsequent episodes premiering on July 10th, 11th and 12th.

HBO has announced it will be airing a four-part documentary on Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine, which chronicles their divergent roots and their unlikely partnership as well as addresses the moguls’ influence and impact on pop culture. Directed by Allen Hughes (Menace II Society), The Defiant Ones features in-depth interviews with Dre and Iovine along with many diverse artists.

The pair have worked together successfully for decades. Interscope Records, cofounded by Iovine, marketed and distributed Dre and Suge Knight’s Death Row Records in the early Nineties. By the end of that decade Iovine and Dre partnered for Dre’s own label, Aftermath. In 2006, Iovine and Dre teamed again to create Beats by Dre and they debuted their first product two years later. Apple purchased the company in 2014 for $3 billion.

The Defiant Ones has everything you expect in a great story – drama and humor, tragedy and triumph,” Casey Bloys, president of HBO Programming said in a statement, via Complex. “Allen Hughes takes you on a journey through some of the most important flash points of popular culture, and I’m delighted we can bring this unforgettable saga to our viewers.”

Hughes filmed Dre and Iovine over the course of three years. In addition to their candid interviews, the documentary houses interviews with Bono, Eminem, Nas, Ice Cube, Gwen Stefani, Snoop Dogg, Trent Reznor and others. It also features behind-the-scenes recording and writing sessions with Eazy-E, Stevie Nicks, N.W.A., Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen and more footage that has not been previously seen.

MULTIHOP.TV HIGHLIGHTS N.W.A’s “Straight Outta Compton” GTA 5 Remake (Video)

Using clips from Grand Theft Augo V, the new four minute clip was created by video artist AnimalRobot and is surely one of the most creative uses of a tricked-out graphics card that we’ve ever seen. Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Eazy-E and the rest of the crew are all clearly reproduced in polygonal form, as are many of the hyperkinetic alleys and streets of Compton itself.

MULTIHOP.TV HIGHLIGHTS Dr. Dre to Donate Royalties from New Album to Build Performing Arts Facility for Compton Youth

Dr. Dre aka Andre Young, said Thursday he “decided to donate all of my artist royalties from the sale of this album to help fund a new performing arts and entertainment facility for the kids in Compton.”

Dre said he spoke to Compton Mayor Aja Brown about ways to give back to the city with the release of his first album in 16 years.

“I’m honored that Mr. Young has decided to make a significant investment in his community,” Brown said in a statement. “He clearly has a heart for Compton, especially our youth. I believe this performing arts center will provide a pathway for creative expression, exposure and training to the myriad of industries that support arts, entertainment and technology — while providing a much-needed safe haven for our youth.”

Brown added that the center would be a therapeutic outlet for youth suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

MC Ren Slams N.W.A ‘Straight Outta Compton’ Movie Trailers: ‘How the Hell You Leave Me Out?’

MC REN : took to social media to express his frustration with Universal Pictures for not depicting him in the Straight Outta Compton movie trailers.

“Man fuck these bitches at universal pictures leaving me out the movie trailers trying to rewrite history, When you have bitches work on a hip hop film that don’t know shit about hip hop this is what happens. How the hell u leave me out after all the work I put into them records. It’s disrespectful to me, my family and most of all my FANS” Ren tweeted on Wednesday, June 10.

The string of honest tweets are valid.  Mc Ren — who is played by Adis Hodge in the film — was a member of N.W.A. along with Ice Cube, the late Eazy-E, DJ Yella and Dr Dre. Unfortunately, the trailers don’t include an appearance by Neil Brown Jr. (who plays Yella) either.
